This is a lovely walk exploring Sherrardspark Wood, a 75-hectares site of ancient woodland within walking distance of Welwyn Garden Station. You'll first climb up the big hill out of the village towards the golf course and then you'll loop back down though more lovely open countryside towards Dane End. Ashridge is a very popular place for families to go walking. You can park on the side of the road here or try the Hexton Road car park (SG5 3BP) which has space for about 4 cars. It's a less varied walk, but great for exercise and fresh air. The paths between the villages are long straight paths through sweeping open farmland, so it's not really a varied walk, but more of a great walk to get some peace and quiet, fresh air and exercise before visiting any of the lovely pubs in either of the villages. Our activities include: Herts Weekend Walkers (HWW for short) is aimed at people in their 40s & 50s who are normally working during the week and can usually only find time to get outside and enjoy a walk at the weekend. The walk is a simple loop with some open countryside, a bit of woodland walking, a visit to the pretty church at the start point and a nice pub for lunch towards the end of the walk. The great thing about a buggy walk here is that there are 3 different loop walk options. You can walk along long lengths of it and in some areas it gets really shallow and is great for paddling on hot summer days. You'll also visit the pretty St Mark church at the start of the walk before you embark on your loop of walking around the woods. There are lots of trails and you're likely to see a Red Kite flying overhead. As a bonus for your extra effort, there is also a lovely pub for a half way pit stop in the small village of Peter's Green. Here are some of our favourite "toddler and buggy" friendly walks in the North Somerset and Bristol area. This route however adds some extra distance, and definitely some extra exercise, by taking you up and over the steep peaks of Warden Hill and Galley Hill about half way around the walk. This former gravel quarry turned nature reserve is located between Welwyn Garden City and Knebworth. You'll enjoy all of the woods and views from the first route, but the extra distance on this one then takes you on a long loop of walking deep into the Hertfordshire countryside that you were enjoying the look of from the top of the hill. It's not that strenuous a hill to tackle, but it will work up more of an appetite for when you return to the lovely pub in the village with it's large beer garden and play area for the kids. Refreshments: The Spotted Dog, Flamsted, Flamstead8 milesThis final route option from Flamstead is an epic circular adventure in the pretty Hertfordshire countryside to the west of the village. As well as enjoying the twisted woodlands with their ancient Beech trees, there is also a large open section of walking on the route that offers some more sunshine and variety to your walk. It might not offer a lot more in terms of extra distance, but the extension adds a walk over Barrow Hill with some nice views and a stroll along the winding River Ash making it a more varied and pretty option. The Alban Way officially starts at Cottonmill Lane in St Albans and finishes at Wrestlers Bridge in Hatfield but there are numerous places to park along the way if you only want to follow a certain section of the trail. This is a very short family-friendly pub walk around the pretty village of Barley, Hertfordshire.
